Weekend’s Wardrobe Analysis – Outfits From The Breakout Netflix Series

If you’re looking for inspiration for your weekend’s wardrobe analysis, look no further than Wednesday Addams from the hit Netflix show. Her all-black ensembles and stompers make for the perfect fashion statement, and with our online dupes, you can easily replicate her style. Costume designer Colleen Atwood has done an excellent job creating a chaotic mash-up of Morticia and Gomez’s hallmarks, making for a unique and captivating wardrobe for Wednesday.

Wednesday Addams’ fashion sense in this iteration is explored extensively throughout the series. She favors all-black ensembles, though she does make room for whites and grays in her closet. Wednesday rarely deviates from her signature look of two long pigtail braids and a black satchel-style backpack (which doubles as Thing’s poor dwelling), in contrast to her vampy-lipped mother Morticia and her Shaun Leane spiky earrings. She favors stompers as her go-to shoe style and is fond of blending expensive and trendy items.

Colleen Atwood, a long-time colleague of Tim Burton’s and winner of an Academy Award for her work in costume design, is responsible for the show’s outfits, which many fans are complimenting online and ready to make their own new personality. Atwood told Tudum that Wednesday’s fashion on the episode is a chaotic mash-up of Morticia’s and Gomez’s distinctive hallmarks. She continued, saying that her preference for conservative dress before attending Nevermore Academy was an indication that she was “trying to belong but not quite fitting it.”

If you’ve been searching for online dupes to Wednesday’s ensemble, your search can end here.

1. TAILORED UNIFORM

Wednesday’s uniform quickly becomes her go-to attire after she reaches Nevermore. Like in the show, Atwood and her team made Jenna a unique suit. Atwood told Harper’s Bazaar that the uniform’s silkscreening method made the stripes purposefully uneven and multicolored so that they would look less flat on camera. A long pleated skirt, jacket, tie, knitted vest, tights or long socks, and a structured white shirt should do the trick if you can’t get your hands on the actual show costume. If you want to get into character for Halloween (or life in general; we don’t judge) in a major way, you may always go the cosplay route and get one made to fit your specific measurements.

Wednesday’s shoes, the notorious Prada monolith loafers, are unquestionably one of the most eye-catching features of her uniform ensemble. The 2019 silhouette, which comes in a variety of iterations, is a favorite of celebrities (and myself, to be honest). Now that Wednesday has brought them back into the spotlight, we can expect to see them on everyone from Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid to Avril Lavigne. They are prohibitively expensive, but there are plenty of affordable alternatives that will achieve the same aesthetic. Doc Martens, specifically the 1461 patent leather platform loafers, are another option; they are great for breaking up an otherwise monochromatic ensemble.

Things have finally reached an intriguing point. Thing gets Wednesday the dress she wears to the Rave’N dance by giving the antique shop a “five-finger discount.” However, Atwood discovered it by chance in the flesh, perched on a mannequin on London’s posh Bond Street. This particular dress is by Alaa and was part of the label’s Fall 2020 ready-to-wear collection, which has since been discontinued. Few of us, let alone normal teenagers, could afford its price, but we know it was likely well into the four figures.

On-screen, though, the option is ideal. It’s the kind of cloth you’d expect to see on dance costumes, said Atwood to Harper’s Bazaar. “It’s not merely a chiffon dress because of the lively layers of transparency. It has such a graceful motion.” Given its high quality, recreating it at home is more of a challenge, but a tulle skirt and a sheer button-up shirt with a cinching leather belt would do the trick.

Wednesday’s affinity for checkerboard patterns is evident, and this warm Zara ensemble is the perfect example. Since its release date likely coincided with the series’ filming in Romania last year, it is no longer for sale in stores, though it can be found on consignment sites like Poshmark. However, there are a plethora of alternatives to choose from if you’d like to create your own look at a more reasonable price (just remember to wear a black turtleneck underneath!).
