Kim Kardashian caused quite a stir when she arrived at the 2022 Met Gala in Marilyn Monroe’s iconic “Happy Birthday Mr. President” dress from 1962. In a recent episode of The Kardashians on Hulu, Kim shared her fears of potential backlash for wearing such a historic garment, but ultimately decided it was worth it to pay homage to the iconic Marilyn. As a fan of both fashion and history, it’s hard not to admire Kim’s bold fashion statement and willingness to take risks.
But I’m afraid some people did disliked it and said things like, “How dare she think she can step into Marilyn’s dress?” According to what Kim mentioned on Thursday’s episode of The Kardashians on Hulu. Also, “I get that.”
During their conversation, she detailed what had transpired at the Met Gala itself. Kim went into detail about her red carpet preparations, including the bleaching of her hair, the purchase of a replica outfit, and the use of a separate changing room.
She went on to say, “All of this — dropping weight, dying the hair for 30 hours, leaving the hotel in a robe, arriving, changing on the red carpet, merely walking to the red carpet, then changing again into a replica of the dress because we can’t risk sitting in it and eating supper. This “wasted” about 10 minutes of my life, at most.
Kim, interviewed for this episode, stated, “I love that Marilyn was a normal girl that figured it out and became the most famous woman in the entire world.” I can’t say enough about how interesting it is.
The producer afterwards stated, “That sounds like someone we know,” although this was said out of camera view. Kim’s response, “Who?” came quickly and without hesitation.
Later, she elaborated on how much persuasion was required to secure a loan of a Marilyn Monroe gown. According to Kardashian, it takes a lot of convincing to get individuals in the fashion world to give her things since they still don’t “trust” her. She said that she had to convince the Marilyn dress’ original owner that she was a good candidate to wear the garment.
For years, no one would ever send us samples because they didn’t believe in us, Kim stated last week. “When I finally made it to Paris and tried on the samples, they were shocked to discover that “Oh, wait, she actually fits in our stuff.” Therefore, I am at a loss as to how to convince the man who owns the original Marilyn clothing that I am a shapeshifter.”
One of Kim’s harshest detractors was designer Bob Mackie. He echoed the sentiments of other Marilyn admirers who felt the outfit should remain in Marilyn’s exclusive possession.
The designer Bob Mackie said of his Met Gala creation, “I thought it was a big mistake,” in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. There was a deity in Marilyn. The goddess, albeit a wacky one. In a word, she was amazing. That’s not how pictures are taken. It was taken care of for her. Specifically for her, Controversy arose, and he argued. It’s inappropriate for anyone else to wear that dress.
