My mind runs over the huge list of “worst outfits I’ve ever worn” at least once a week, and the dress-over-pants combination always jumps out. It was 2007 when Ashley Tisdale, Miley Cyrus, and other Disney Channel stars, together with later-to-be-famous actresses like Anne Hathaway and Zoe Saldana, made dresses over jeans the fashion must-have. So, being the fashion-forward young lady that I have always been, I gave the babydoll dress with spaghetti straps and aquamarine color a go, pairing it with straight-leg jeans and silver ballet flats.
This one recollection was enough to give me the willies when I saw that TikTok had revived the fad. I kept having these imaginary debates with the TikTok developers who were too young to remember the original age of the style, much like an elderly neighbor ordering you to get off their property. But when fashion designers began using the technique as well, I knew I had to keep an open mind, if only for the sake of my career.
This iteration was sufficient for me to continue my criticism of the tendency. After all, everything old (and embarrassing!) can be made cool again, just like corsets, butterfly tops, whale tails, and micro skirts.
