Feminine Men’s Clothes – They Will Be More Feminine in 2023

In 2019, the trend of men’s feminism was seen on the streets of Paris and New York. The rise of androgynous styling for men is evident in current urban fashion trends that emphasize feminine details such as tops, corsets, and girly looks, also known as “Girly menswear” or feminine men’s clothes.

Men are expected to be strong, dominant, and emotionally distant, and these ideals must be cultivated through practice. It’s not a manly trait to show strong emotions. Women, meanwhile, were expected to be the polar opposite of men, who were depicted as tough and powerful while also being soft and staying at home.

Across the world, women are becoming more assertive and independent; they are increasingly participating in traditionally male-dominated activities such as contact sports, boxing, and basketball. As a result of the gender gap, females have been taught to be more flexible, while men are expected to behave more traditionally.

While sensitivity was never a component of the male perspective, it was always a defining characteristic of female identity. One way to disprove the gender binary is for males to dress like women, sending the message that they, too, can be as emotional as women.

Toxic Masculinity

According to Wikipedia, the term “toxic masculinity” is used in psychological and media discourses about males to describe a set of cultural standards that are harmful to both society and men.

Depression, stress, and substance misuse are just some of the mental health issues linked to men’s over-reliance on themselves and others. The unspoken rule of behavior among men in American jails is characterized by noxious masculine qualities. This phenomenon has emerged due in part to the oppressive nature of prison life.

Other stereotypically masculine characteristics, such as hard work ethic, sporting prowess, and providing for one’s family, are not seen as “toxic.” Historically, authors like Shepherd Bliss, who is part of the mythopoetic men’s movement, used this term to argue that modern men have lost touch with “true” or “deep” masculinity.

Men will be Men

Men are the product of cultural norms. The promotion of violence, including sexual assault and domestic violence, is one way in which “toxic” characteristics like being naturally dominating and related traits like sexism and homophobia are defined. When it comes to bullying and aggression, the phrase “Men will be men” is often used to justify violent behavior in males.

More “toxic” masculine standards, such as valuing independence, desiring dominance over women, and sexual promiscuity or “playboy” conduct, appear to amplify the effect in men.

Psychological Impact

The American Psychological Association claims that “traditional masculinity ideology” has been detrimental to men’s psychological and physiological well-being.

Psychiatric issues like depression, anxiety, stress, body image issues, substance abuse, and low social functioning are more common among men who adhere to traditionally masculine cultural norms like risk-taking, violence, dominance, the primacy of work, the need for emotional control, the desire to win, and the pursuit of social status.

Since gender roles have changed for both men and women, we must reevaluate what it means to be a man in the modern world.

Men's concept of beauty: Skincare vs. Cosmetics

According to Allied Market Research, the market for men’s personal care products is projected to be worth $166 billion by 2022.

  • According to NPD’s iGen Cosmetic Consumer Study, about 40% of adults in that age range are interested in gender-neutral beauty products.
  • NPD found that during the last year, sales of skin care products aimed specifically at men increased by 7%.
  • Recent research indicates that today’s youth prefer a non-binary attitude to beauty. Nearly forty percent of adults ages 18 to 22 are interested in gender-neutral beauty products. Euromonitor reports that in 2018, more than 56% of male respondents in the United States used foundation, concealer, or BB cream on their faces at least once.

Diving into the growing men’s grooming trend, Chanel released a collection of boy’s makeup last year, featuring a tinted fluid in four hues, a matte hydrating lip balm, and four shades of eyebrow pencil.

Leeds Beckett University social psychology professor Brendan Gough observed that “guys are invested in their appearance to some degree” today. He has studied British men’s habits for over two decades and found that their views on physical attractiveness have shifted significantly throughout that time.

Gen Z male customers are also shaping attitudes and behaviors in response to the increasing pressures placed on men by the movement toward women’s empowerment. Men’s use of makeup has expanded to become a standard aspect of personal hygiene. Men use cosmetics for health and hygiene reasons, not to enhance their appearance.

Western consumers “The moisturizer was a taboo not so long ago, and now it’s routine,” Gough said. Makeup, along with other traditionally female domains like domesticity and child care, is “one of the last bastions of femininity that males are intruding upon,” as the saying goes.

Men's Feminine Dressing

Since they are the ones to come after us, members of Generation Z will have to figure out how masculinity develops in the years to come. Jaden Smith and Lil Uzi Vert, two male celebrities of their generation, are more progressive and open, sexually fluid, and gender-fluid than millennials because they sometimes wear skirts and blouses. According to one expert, men who use cosmetics or paint their faces aren’t seen as less manly because of this shift in perspective on traditional notions of masculinity.
