Cutout dresses are one of the hottest fashion trends in 2021, making a comeback from the early aughts. Once associated with rebellious teens and late-night parties, cutouts have been reinvented by the world of high fashion and have dominated the runways during Spring ’22, with whale tales and hole-punching designs leading the way.
Although cutouts were once considered a taboo trend, models and celebrities have recently embraced the fashion statement, wearing these skin-baring patterns in a way that is more accessible outside the Hollywood bubble. Bella Hadid, for example, wore a pair of black, low-rise pants with hip cutouts on a night out in Paris back in June, and paired them with a simple black tank and lace bralette. Wearing a simple, understated attire is quite fine for a night on the town.
Kim Kardashian also wore a carved-out outfit to the Vatican City in early July, baring her back and hips. Kourtney Kardashian’s black-and-white striped bodycon dress with circular cutouts flowing down her underarms to her skirt’s slit was one of the trend’s more daring examples. Dua Lipa wowed in a two-piece suit with cutouts across her chest on an outing with Anwar Hadid while Katie Holmes walked the black carpet in a highly cutaway LBD.
